One of my greatest joys is to meet new people and hear their stories. This inspired an art project in which I interview strangers, translate their tales into custom, handwritten t-shirts, and then gift the shirts to the subjects.
I’ve made hundreds of shirts in this manner, in locations ranging from Burning Man to SFMOMA to a three-day boat cruise with The Flaming Lips. In collaboration with photographer Michael Kennedy, I’ve done “live” art shows in New York, SF and LA, in which gallery attendees have shirts made for them, get photographed, and ultimately become the art on the walls.
